Viewers are viscerally enticed to dig in to “Pates Baroni” as enthusiastically as its subject digs into his plate of pasta. By Leonetto Cappiello (1875 – 1942), a former caricaturist who became a forerunner of modern advertising, it showcases his technique of using exaggerated colors, subjects and humor to create a vivid memory of the products he painted. In 40 years he produced 1000 cutting-edge posters, leading the Art Deco movement and setting the precedent for today’s advertising techniques.
