“Map World – Antique Paper” by Flemish mapmaker Gerardus Mercator (1512 – 1594) was a mapmaking breakthrough that, for the first time, allowed sailors to travel long distances with minimal changes in compass readings. Mercator charted the earth using a technique which for the first time accurately depicted a round object on a flat surface. Mercator studied numerous astronomy, geography and math, to help him in creating the Mercator method which displayed the Earth in a way that challenged the Church leading to his arrest for heresy.
