Originally a Stock Exchange clerk in Budapest, Kertesz (1894 – 1985) took groundbreaking portraits, nudes and still lifes. With the Austro-Hungarian Army, he began his career as a photographer, taking pictures of soldiers engaged in normal activity, which diverged from the usual war pictures.
