The anonymous nurse and sailor achieved instant worldwide fame as they passionately embrace in Victor Jorgensen’s iconic “Kissing the War Goodbye.” The two complete strangers were photographed in Times Square during a moment of spontaneous joy following World War II’s end. Jorgensen’s photo, similar to one by “Life” magazine photographer Alfred Eisenstaedt, was published the next day in the “New York Times.”
