Costumed in catlike makeup, original KISS drummer Peter Criss powerfully pounced on his drums like cornered prey. Growing up on Brooklyn’s gritty streets, he was a gang member who took up the drums to unleash his frustrations. After playing dive clubs, Bar Mitzvahs and weddings for 10 years, Criss finally signed a recording contract with a band that fizzled after its first album hit the streets. Down, but not defeated, he ran an ad in “Rolling Stone” saying, “Drummer willing to do anything to make it.” Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons responded, and the rest is KISStory.
