“Jammin’ at the Savoy,” by African-American artist Romare Bearden, celebrates jazz’s groundbreaking style. This innovative work echoes the music's spontaneous tempos with unexpected bursts of color, unique spatial structure, friction and harmony. From Harlem, Bearden (1911 – 1988) was inspired by both Cubism and his neighborhood's thriving jazz scene, as well as the music’s African-American roots. Creating an astonishing 2,000 works, Bearden is one of the 20th century’s most prominent African-American artists.
