Immunofluorescent Light Micrograph of astrocytes within mammalian brain. Astrocytes are starshaped cells found in the central nervous system, which form part of the neuroglia (nerve glue). Here, stained red, their branching armlike processes are seen. They are performing clean up operations by consuming surface components of dead neurons (yellow). Neurons are nerve impulse conducting cells. Astrocytes also provide nutrients for neurons, and may take part in information storage. Immunofluorescence is a staining technique which uses antibodies to attach fluores cent dyes to specific tissues and to molecules within the cell. Magnification: x400 at 35mm, x750 at 6x4.5cm.
