Hominid fossil skull 1470 named after its museum number & thought to be Homo habilis, or handy man. It was reconstructed from 150 fragments of fossil bone & is surrounded by remaining fragments The skull was found by Richard Leakeys team at East Turkana, Kenya, in 1972. Debate surrounded the identification & age of 1470: some thought it resembled the australopithecines while others, believed it belonged with Homo. Initially the skull was dated at 2.6 million years, making it the Oldest Man found. Later the age was revised to 1.8 million years. Fossil evidence of H.habilis gives the species a wide distribution in Africa, & a timespan from 2.1 to 1.8 million years ago.
