In creating “Flag,” Jasper Johns made an artwork that was ahead of its time using a primitive combination of furniture paint, newspaper collage and wax encaustic in his most famous artwork. A forerunner of the Minimalist movement, as well as the Conceptual and Pop Art movements, Johns’ bold depictions of popular icons forced an awareness of the painting as the object, itself. Realisticly depicting well known objects, Jasper Johns’ has created intaglio prints, lithographs and sculptures and is also known for reworking prior paintings.
