Brown mould fungus. Light micrograph of a section through decaying plant tissue infected with brown mould fungus (Aspergillus glaucum). Aspergillus is a saprophyte mould that lives on decaying plant and animal matter, such as vegetables, old leather and paper. Stalklike conidiophores (dark) develop from the moulds hyphae (tubular) and produce conidia (spores, dense patches). Air currents then distribute the conidia. Magnification: x138 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
