Originally born as Gyula Halasz, (1899 – 1984), Brassai enjoyed photographing the Parisian streets at night to capture the lives of prostitutes, gays, lesbians and those who gathered in pubs and brothels. Eventually, he began a 25 year association with Harper’s Bazaar after the editor gave him absolute freedom to choose his own subjects. His alternative approach to photography also inspired him to shoot Paris’ wall graffiti. Famous artists such as Pablo Picasso, Henri Miller and Georges Braque all collected Brassai’s work.
