Juvenile emperor angelfish (Pomacanthus imperator). This fish inhabits reefs throughout the tropical IndoPacific region, feeding on sponges and other sedentary animals. It can reach a length of around 40 centimetres. Many species of reef fish have juveniles that little resemble the adults, both with respect to their markings and body form. The bright markings are thought to warn potential predators of the juveniles toxicity as other reef animals have shown. However, it is unlikely that the anglefish young are toxic in any way. The striking colouration has led to this fish having huge popularity in the marine pet trade. Photographed in Pulau Kapalai, Sabah, Malaysia.
