Theater artist Georges Barbier (1882 – 1932) imbues a poster with the lush detailing of a tapestry in “Duval, Svoboda.” Paulette Duval and Vacelav Svoboda were famous dancers in the early 20th century. Duval danced and acted in many movies, and was a dancer for the Ziegfeld Follies and George White. Svoboda was a Bolshoi Ballet dancer, performed in numerous Russian films and founded a New York dance school. Possibly Barbier’s first poster, “Duval, Svoboda” is his finest accomplishment in this medium.
