When Johannes Itten (1888- 1967) took the color wheel out for a spin, he revolutionized the world’s perception of color. Itten radically updated the existing color wheel by classifying how adjacent colors affect each other; categorizing color’s physical, psychological and emotional impact; and adding seven contrasts. While teaching at Germany’s Bauhaus, Itten created the breakthrough book, “The Art of Color,” which became the school’s educational staple. Itten’s insightful color theories still influence today’s cosmetologists, artists and designers.
