Iconic artist Alex Katz pioneered New Realism, an art movement typified by areas of flat, forceful color, which strongly influenced the Pop movement. His signature portraits, often featuring his wife, Ada, display the exciting variety he brings to the genre, including dramatic scale variations and abrupt cropping of images. Katz rose to international acclaim and impacted younger generations of artists after his works were presented at major museum retrospectives in 1986 and 1988. At age 80, Katz is now hailed as an important American painter.
