Called the “King of the Clipper Ship School,” Montague Dawson (1895 – 1973) was one of the 20th century’s most renowned nautical artists. Raised near the ocean by a seafaring family, he excelled at depicting the relationship of sky, sea and ship in his paintings. Employed by “the Sphere” as a maritime battle illustrator during both World Wars, at the peak of his career, Dawson was said to be the highest-paid painter other than Picasso.

We are setting up a room at home as an old fashioned English Pub with a nautical theme. We have called it 'The Hornblower'. This print goes above the open fire place. It looks sensational. It has changed the room!
On another note, the service from All Posters was fantastic. We had queries about a discount and about postage and both matters were handled very well.

I bought it to complete a quartet of marine paintings showing the great sailing ships of a bygone age. Here Dawson beautifully captured the energy of wind and sea, together with a sensation of the amazing speed of the wind-driven ship as it ploughs through the churning waters.

i bought this because i am a fan of the Horatio Hornblower books, and this painting reminded me of one of his ships..an early 1900's warship, which is either being chased or chasing another ship as dawn breaks..it is a beautiful painting..it takes up a whole wall in my family room.
