A damaged heavy artillery piece, probably Turkish, lies on top of a Dardanelles beach. The battle between Allied forces and Turkish forces at the Gallipoli Peninsula for access to the strategic Sea of Mamora and eventually to Constantinople (Istanbul) was a disastrous military campaign for the Allies. In February 1915 Turkish mines sank 6 British battleships, causing the naval assault on the Dardanelles to stall. A second Allied landing at Gallipoli failed in August and British forces evacuated Gallipoli in November 1915.
