It works by blocking bacterial Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) replication by binding itself to an enzyme called DNA gyrase. This causes fatal, doublestranded breaks in the bacterial chromosome. It belongs to a group of antibiotics known as quinolones and is taken for disorders including: infections of the bladder, kidneys and genital organs; inflamation of the prostate gland; some types of gastroenteritis and pneumonia.
