Evoxymetopon taeniatus (Gill, 1863). Scabbardfish are elongate marine fishes with minuscule tail fins. This specimen comes from the Caribbean. Note the expanded, balloon-like bones at the base of the dorsal-fin rays, just above and behind the head. This unusual characteristic may be related to a high level of calcium in the water. Size of specimen: 1.37 meters (4.5 feet)
