Charles Burton Barber (1845 – 1894), who specialized in realistic, tender portraits of children with dogs, was an acclaimed artist in Victorian England. Educated at London’s Academy Schools, he was commissioned to paint Queen Victoria’s favorite dogs for almost 25 years. He also painted other royal canines, illustrated children’s books and dabbled in photography. A frequent Royal Academy exhibitor, Barber won many esteemed awards.
