Johann Theodore de Bry (1561 – 1623) was a master German botanical painter. He displayed exceptional realism and detailing in magnificent illustrated flower books, two of which were deemed the most beautiful of his era. De Bry devoted one book completely to an exotic new import from Turkey, the tulip. De Bry also assisted his father in illustrating “Great Voyages,” famous travel narratives that were essential to the Age of Discovery.
