Displaying a simple elegance, Henry Clarke’s “Bar du Soleil, 1961” taken from a fashion spread in Vogue conveys the refinement of high fashion at the height of French domination of the fashion world. Clarke (1918 – 1996), renowned for his post-war portrayals of haute couture extravagance, simultaneously worked for French, British and American Vogue from 1950 – 1975. Covering their spring and summer collections more often than any other photographer in the 60s, Clarke had the rare privilege of shooting large spreads for the American edition.
