“Autumn,” a remarkable human face formed entirely from seasonal fruit and vegetables, was painted by Italian artist Giuseppe Arcimboldo (1527 – 1593), and is displayed at France’s Louvre. Arcimboldo originally designed stained-glass windows and frescoes with his father at the Milan Cathedral, and later served as the court painter for Emperors Ferdinand I, Maximilian II and Rudolph II. During this period, he painted his fantastical, allegorical faces made entirely of produce, books and animals. After his death, Arcimboldo was forgotten until the Surrealists rediscovered and celebrated his works.
