Norwegian explorer Roald Engelbrecht Amundsen (1872-1928) was the first to navigate the Northwest Passage and reach the South Pole. Amundsen's ship, Maud, lost for more than two years in the Arctic reappeared in 1925. For two years she was held in the ice grip, drifting at the mercy of the pack; twice her crew of eight, alone in the Arctic, were in the greatest danger. The Maud was lifted out of the water by the pressure of ice flows. On another occasion she was thrown on her beam ends in an ice jam and the ship was about to be abandoned, with the prospect of the party perishing in the ice. All but one of the crew have returned after a voyage of three years and four months.
