Erté’s vast body of distinctive work powerfully influenced fashion, as well as a whole artistic movement. Born Romain de Tirtoff, Erté (1892 – 1990), was known by the French pronunciation of his initials. He contributed unique illustrations to Harper’s Bazaar for two decades, launching the Art Deco movement. Erté also designed elaborate stage and movie costumes, and re-created his legendary works in bronze and serigraphy while in his 70s. Today’s fashions still reflect Erte’s foresight, and his iconic artworks are displayed at numerous prestigious museums.
