Fiona Banner creates nude studies from life, transcribing visual appearances into a verbal description. These ‘wordscapes’ define the shapes and forms of the body as well as fleeting moments such as the tension in a second of shared eye contact, or a nervous finger tapping. Banner’s print is a nude study of a Paralympic cyclist. Her description presents him as though he is more a sculptural form than human being – piercing rod of muscle, steel buttocks, rhythmic rigidity of his form - a sense that is only heightened by his carbon prosthetic leg. Focusing on his strength and physicality, it is clear that this is an elite athlete very much at the forefront of his sport.
